The sound of glass breaking is instantly recognizable. I’d been telling my best friend Missi a silly story and had spun around in the living room when I heard that sound and froze.

When I looked down at the carpet, it was covered with pieces of sparkling red, pink and clear glass. Missi said. "Oh, no, not the vase.''

"Why? What did I do?" My face reddened.

A couple of minutes after six we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home. Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood. Hello! It’s hot today. I want to treat you girls to that frozen yogurt I know you like, Let’s go! ” her mom said. She pointed at the open door.

The dinner had not been expected.  He had been passing a large house near the beginning of that great broad street called Fifth Avenue, where lived two ladies of an old family who had a deep love of tradition that on Thanksgiving Day food will be offered to the first hungry person to walk by. Today Steve happened to be the one to pass by on his way to the park.

Steve sat in the park, appearing to be waiting for somebody, but appearing not to expect something to happen. Suddenly his eyes grew wider and his breath stopped. For the old gentleman was coming across Fourth Avenue toward Steve's seat.

Every Thanksgiving Day for nine years the old gentleman had come there to find Steve on his seat. Then he had led Steve to a restaurant and watched him eat a big dinner, which had been a part of Thanksgiving Day. The old gentleman was thin and tall and sixty. His hair was whiter and thinner than it had been last year. His legs shook, seeming not as strong as they were the year before.

I’m from the fishing town of Kinsale, in Ireland. Life is pretty good there, but Dubai caught my attention when I was 18. I moved there myself 10 years ago as a 30-year-old film-maker. It’s been a wild ride, full of chaos and wonder.

My wife, Christine, lives here with me; when her sister Angela came to visit in April this year, the three of us set off in my pickup truck. It was a cloudless day, touching 40 ℃. The heat and humidity were violent, so we had to sightsee from the car.

We took the scenic route between Dubai and Ras al-Khaimah, a charming city in the north. A year earlier, while off-roading with a friend, I got stuck at a water crossing there, at the only inlet on the coast, where the sea flows into a swampy lagoon (咸水湖). I had to be rescued, and learned how quickly the tide (潮水) could come in.

Christine spotted what looked like the Loch Ness monster stuck in the sand. We decided to investigate and drove up to where the sand met the lagoon. It was a camel, not moving.

Since relocating here, I have always kept a shovel, rope, torches and knives in my car—getting stuck in the desert can be debilitating (耗费体力).

I got out my shovel and approached the camel. It was a female; we nicknamed her Stucky. It looked as if she had been trapped for hours—she was in quite deep. I’ve been around camels a lot in Dubai; they are massive. They can be friendly, but they can also be fierce. I approached Stucky slowly and started to gently dig away the sand around her. I kept patting her. I knew if she swung her head around quickly, she could injure herself, or me.

With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. “I've heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o'clock on Monday or eleven o'clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?" I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.

I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, “What do you want?" He sounded furious but curious. "All I want is a chance to audition(试镜) I just want you to know my face, That's all I'm asking"

I didn't know whether I'd ever hear from him again, bur two weeks later, his secretary called. "Mr. Slaight wants to know if you'd like to come and audition for a new school life show." I immediately answered, “Sure!”

So I searched for some cash, only to find I had nothing but credit cards." I'm sorry, sweetheart, but I don't have any cash," I said. “I have some, Mom!" June replied. She opened her little pink purse and pulled out a five-dollar bill. “Oh, good. I'll pay you back when we get home,” I responded with a sigh of relief. “No, Mom,” she insisted, “I want to help him. I don't want you to pay me back. I want to give him my money.”

 As we drove down the crowded rows of the parking lot, I reassured her that we would get to him. When we got there, I called out, “Excuse me, sir!" He cautiously walked toward our car and answered, “Yes, ma'am?”  “Here you go, sir.” June stretched out her entire body to hand him her five dollar bill through the window and explained, “I want you to have this." He smiled and hesitatingly asked, “This was your money?” “Yes! I want you to have it,” she proudly answered. “Thank you,” he said, touched by her thoughtfulness.

We exchanged a smile, and as we drove away, my younger daughter Scarlett began to cry. I hadn't noticed that she had emptied her purse and was holding two quarters in her tiny hands.

After exchanging names. I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right, making polite conversation the whole way. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. Welcome to JFK, and I hope your day goes all right.”

I said thanks and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle who was wearing a letter jacket covered with patches. I decided that this guy was popular, so I managed to get a seat right next to him. I said, “Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m new here.” He said, “Johnny.”

Because it was raining, Edun had to wear her rain pants, her rain hat, her rain jacket, and her waterproof boots. Her jacket had a rough material on the inside. She didn’t like how it felt against her skin.

After about half an hour’s drive, they parked at a trailhead（登山口）. The rain had stopped but the ground was still dripping wet. “We’ll be there by afternoon!” Mom promised. The afternoon sounded far away.

Will identified a bird sitting on a nearby branch — “Fox sparrow!” — then he raced down the trail and was soon out of sight.

Edun rested under a pine tree. “You can’t force me to walk,” Edun said. “You’re right,” said her mom smilingly, standing under the tree, too, “But you will never know what may lie ahead and amaze us.”

I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room cabin in the middle of a cotton field. The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house. Obviously, she could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit—no car, no phone, no real job, nothing but a roof over her head. I could see daylight through the roof in several places.

Her little granddaughter was about 10, barefoot and wearing a feed sack (麻布袋) dress. I explained to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month and that she should stop writing to us every time she saw our advertisement. I drove away heartsick, but my advice had no effect—she still sent us the same postcard every six weeks. Always wanting a new piano, red mahogany, she swore she would never miss a $10 payment. It was sad.

Several years later, I owned my own piano company, and when I advertised in that area, the postcards started coming to me. For months, I ignored them—what else could I do?

Fun was far beyond what Mia desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply (长粉刺的)face, she felt hopeless and disappointed.

“Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Mia began writing crazily as idea after idea fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story.

“OK, pass your papers forward," said the teacher. “Let's see what we have.” For the rest  of the class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Mia originally thought it would be awkward. However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher's voice. "He's actually enjoying this," she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students' papers not read, including Mia's paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their work themselves in front of the class next class.

“Why won't she just stay in with us all the time?” Nathan, my youngest son asked.

I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased.

“That must be nice,” Jordan muttered from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could come and go. He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.

Meatball became a regular.

One night, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.

I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me and meowed again. I patted her head, “I know you're not happy, but it's for your own good.”

“Mom's not being mean to you,” Nathan told the cat. “She's just trying to keep you from turning into a frozen meatball.” We both laughed at his joke.

The next morning, I couldn't find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.
